Drama clubs do battle

THE EK Rep’s annual One Act Play Festival welcomed a high standard of entrants once again this year.

The adjudication was presided over by Dr Paul K. Dougall, the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Strathclyde, senior lecturer in drama education and an adjudicator/assessor of the Scottish Community Drama Association.

He said of this year’s entries: “Some were very challenging and of a very high standard.”

Known as ‘the friendly festival’, each of the competing clubs performed in an atmosphere that remained friendly and most of all enjoyable.

They came from Carluke,ŠFintry, Saltcoats, Rutherglen, Largs, Falkirk and East Kilbride.

The prizegiving was opened by a few words of thanks from EK Rep‘s president, Mrs Jean Macmillan.

She thanked all who had organised and helped out and not only the clubs many of whom who had travelled far, but also for the support of the audiences over the week of the festival.

The winners were: 1st –ŠJohn McNicol Trophy, Kirkton PlayersŠfromŠCarluke with Two by Jim Cartwright;Š2nd –ŠArts Council Trophy, Tryst Theatre from Falkirk with Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me by Frank McGuinness; 3rd –ŠWhitemoss Trophy, Largs Players from Largs with Melody” by Deirdre Kinahan. Best Actor – Alf Davidson Trophy, Gerrard BurnsŠofŠKirkton Players (Carluke) in Two. Best Actress –ŠEK Rep The Club Trophy, Maureen Powell of Silhouette (West Kilbride) in Laundry and Bourbon. Best Staging – Betty McAuley Trophy, Laundry and Bourbon a comedy by James McLure, produced by Richard Powell of Silhouette.
