SWIMMER Corrie Scott excelled on her debut for Edinburgh University at the weekend – smashing three Scottish age group records while claiming a trio of medals.
The 18-year-old was in Sheffield for the British Universities’ Swimming Championships and put in outstanding performances to claim gold in the 50 metres breaststroke in 31.63 seconds and bronze in the 200m breaststroke in two minutes 29.51 seconds.
Corrie also helped the Edinburgh team to silver in the 4x50m freestyle relay after just missing out on bronze in the 200m individual medley (IM) in a time of 2.14.99.
The Strathaven teenager swam personal bests in every event and broke three records for her age to cap a marvellous weekend.
Corrie is now ranked number two for her age in the UK’s 50m breaststroke category, but she still wasn’t entirely satisfied with her achievements.
She told the News: “It was a great meet for me and I’m really happy with my performance.
“But I was so disappointed to miss out on bronze in the 200 IM.
“I only missed out by 0.05 seconds so that was annoying, but I can’t complain too much.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect because it’s the first time I’ve represented Edinburgh, but the whole team was fantastic and we finished fourth overall.
“Our coach was delighted with our performances and we got some good feedback.
“My aim before the championships was to get PBs in all my swims and I’ve done just that, but to get some medals on top of that and break records as well is really pleasing.
“I’ve been training really hard over the last few weeks to prepare for this and my performances at the weekend show that it’s been working for me and hopefully I can kick on from here.”
The medicinal and biological chemistry student started university in September and remains part of East Kilbride Amateur Swimming Club, despite joining the Edinburgh University team.
And now Corrie has a trip to the land of Oz to look forward to before putting all her efforts into preparing for the Olympic trials in March.
She added: “I’ve got a couple of smaller competitions in the next few weeks, but I’m looking forward to the training camp in Australia with the Edinburgh girls.
“It’s a chance for us to practice in an Olympic-size pool, so that will be perfect preparation for the Olympic trials early next year.”
