Corrie hopeful ahead of Uni swim championships

CORRIE Scott is hoping to achieve new personal bests when she takes part in her first British Universities Swimming Championships at the weekend.

The 18-year-old, from Strathaven, started university in September and now the youngster has her sights set on some good performances at Ponds Forge in Sheffield as she swims for Edinburgh University.

Corrie, who competed in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last year, said: “This will be the first time I’ve been able to swim for Edinburgh so I’m really looking forward to it.

“My training has been going well and it’s going to come down to how I react to everything I’ve been doing in those sessions.

“I’m not sure what to expect but I’m hoping for PBs in the 50 metre and 200m breaststroke as well as the 200m individual medley so if I can reach that target I would be happy.”

Corrie remains an East Kilbride Swimming Club member despite linking up with the university’s swim team.

And after the meet in Sheffield, Corrie will start preparing for the Olympic trials in March.

However, she admits it’s unlikely she will make the team for London.

The medicinal and biological chemistry student added: “The last year has been good for me, but there’s not a realistic chance of me making the team for London.

“I got invited to the Flanders Cup next month with Team GB, but I’m at a training camp in Australia with some of the Edinburgh Uni girls so I’m missing out on that, but it was an honour to be asked to represent them.

“I’ll be out there as a warm-up for the Olympic trials, but London might be a bit early for me.

“I’ve always said my realistic goal was the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and these trials coming up will be a great experience.

“I’ll get to swim in an Olympic-size pool and if I make the finals I’d be happy with that.

“The universities championships are the last main event of the year for me, so after that it’s all about preparing for the trials.”
