THE organisers of the International Children’s Games in Lanarkshire are looking for volunteers for next year’s event.
And they are hoping there will be a big response from the people of the East Kilbride and Strathaven areas.
August 2011 will see over 1500 young athletes from around the globe set their sights on Lanarkshire when the county hosts the event, which is billed as the ‘mini-Olympics’
More than 2000 athletes, coaches, officials and visitors from around 90 international cities will head to Lanarkshire to be a part of the most ambitious International Children’s Games ever.
And with just over a year to go, the preparations are getting into full swing throughout the area.
So if you want to be a part of the biggest event to hit Lanarkshire, this is your chance.
The Games organising committee are looking for volunteers who will give their all and have a passion to be involved in an event which will be remembered for years to come.
And Councillor Jackie Burns, joint chair of the Lanarkshire 2011 International Children’s Games, is encouraging local people to get involved.
She said: “Our team of friendly and helpful volunteers will be a very important part of the success of the Lanarkshire 2011 Games.
“We are looking for volunteers to fill 600 diverse positions which include key supporting roles behind the scenes and providing information and assistance to our visitors as greeters and stewards.
“There will also be a requirement for specialist volunteers with particular skills such as interpreters and medical staff and volunteers with experience in sports ranging from swimming to football and sailing to golf.”
There is no deadline for applying but it is to your advantage to submit your application as early as possible so that people can be assigned to a volunteer role based on their preferences.
A cut-off date may be set at a later time enough volunteers come forward to fill all required positions.

The form will guide you through a process to identify your interests and availability during the Games.
All volunteers will be required to attend specific training events and, depending on their role, may be required to complete a Disclosure Scotland application.
