Proctor enjoying Caley resurgence

INVERNESS defender David Proctor is happy for his side to slowly creep up the First Division table as his side battle it out for promotion.

Before Christmas, the Caley Jags looked out of the title race but Proctor’s side have gone on an impressive eight-game unbeaten run since the festive period and now find themselves in third place, well within touching distance of league leaders Dundee.

And the 25-year-old from Westwood is content to take things one game at a time as his side look to bounce straight back into the SPL.

He told the News: “We seem to have gone on a good run in recent weeks and that’s us gone eight games unbeaten so we are gradually climbing up the league and closing the gap on Dundee. We’ve not made much of a fuss about it and we are happy to go about our business quietly and let others battle it out while we sneak up on them.

“Dundee had a large lead at the top but that’s them dropped a good few points now and they’ve stuttered in recent weeks so they will be looking to get back to form as quick as they can, but we’ve still to play them twice this season so there is a chance we can go higher up the table.”

If Caley Thistle win their game in hand, they would be just four points behind Dundee but this Saturday they must concentrate on seeing off fellow title challengers Queen of the South who are three points behind Inverness with two games in hand.

So Proctor knows it’s important to follow up on Saturday’s 4-0 win away to Raith Rovers and stop Queens in their tracks.

The former Dundee United player added: “Queen of the South could go second if they win all their games in hand so we know they will be eager to start climbing up the table themselves. But we believe we can keep our good form running.

“On Saturday we were expecting a really tough game after Raith almost knocked Aberdeen out of the Scottish Cup the week before, but we ran out comfortable winners. It was a real struggle in the first half, but in the second we managed to grind out the opening goal and we were comfortable after that and went on to get a few more goals.

“If we can do that again this weekend it should stand us in good stead.”
