Willie claims the individual crown

WILLIE Houston claimed victory in the Inter-Area Seniors’ 60-plus golf tournament last Monday as he won the individual prize at Torrance House Golf Club.

He represented East Kilbride Sports Council at the annual event and although the town lost out in the team event, Willie restored some pride by taking first place in the individual awards.

The tournament was contested between the four South Lanarkshire sports councils – East Kilbride, Hamilton, Cambuslang/Rutherglen and Clydesdale – and the main event on the day was the 60-plus Stableford Team Golf Tournament.

That event was won by Hamilton Sports Council’s team of B Baxter, M Reilly, D Scullion, P Law, D Hart and H Smillie, while Willie Houston was the top individual player during the contest racking up 44 points.

This year’s competition was hosted by East Kilbride Sports Council and their chairman Jim Ballantyne was on hand to present the Hamilton side with the challenge trophy.

Mr Ballantyne said: “The course was in good condition and it provided an excellent challenge to the competitors on the day.

“This project was an excellent opportunity for senior golfers from South Lanarkshire to represent their area and come together to compete for the challenge trophy and I hope this event continues to be successful for many years to come.”
