JAGS boss Colin Mitchell was relieved to stop the rot at the weekend, but knows a tough match beckons as Thistle travel to Largs to play the league leaders.
Thistle claimed their first win in four league matches against Port Glasgow on Saturday and Mitch was delighted to stop the club’s run of defeats.
He told the News: “It was brilliant to get the win. Everyone battled away and we deserved to win the match after a difficult start. It’s just good to stop the rot and get the three points.
“We struggled for the first 15 minutes and they dominated early on, but even at that we still had the best chances in the first half. Once we settled down we defended really well and I was pleased with that aspect of the team because we’ve not been too great at the back in some of our games.
“But we were still creating chances as well and the guys are putting them away.”
Port Glasgow are bottom of the league, but Thistle face an altogether tougher clash this weekend when they face table toppers Largs Thistle.
On the opening day of the season the Jags claimed a 2-1 victory over Largs at the Showpark, but with Tony McInally’s team out in front, Mitch knows things are going to be tougher this time around.
Mitch said: “It will be a totally different game. They’ve gone from strength to strength since the start of the season whereas we’ve struggled, so we know it’s going to be a difficult game.
“In the first match a draw would have been a fair result, but we got a late penalty and got the win, which we were delighted with.
“I spoke to Tony the other day and he says they’re improving all the time, but I think we are capable of getting a result at Largs.
“As long as we concentrate on our game and play to our strengths then there’s a chance for the boys to make a wee name for themselves and beat the team at the top of the league.
“We are scoring goals at the moment and defensively we are getting better, so we want to win the game.”
