EK soccer star Megan helps club to 3-0 victory

MEGAN Sneddon’s rollercoaster season continued this week as she claimed the League Cup with Glasgow City.

The 23-year-old from Greenhills recovered quickly from the heartache of missing out on the European Championships with Scotland to help guide her club to a 3-0 victory over Spartans on Saturday.

Megan has gone from the highs of being part of the first Scottish team to make it to the European Club Championships second round and making the playoff for the European International Championships, to the low of crashing out of both at the final hurdle.

But, at the weekend, the League Cup victory soothed the blow and has given Megan renewed optimism for the rest of the season.

She told the News: “I’m absolutely delighted to win the cup and it makes up a bit for what happened last week. It’s the first time Glasgow City have won this trophy, so that’s another little bit of history we’ve made this season.

“The game itself was a lot easier than we expected and we could have scored more. We knew Spartans had good individuals and very quick strikers, so we stopped the ball going through to them and shut them down quickly – that was the key to winning the game.

“We didn’t let them play at all and we played so well that we didn’t give them a chance. It was amazing that it was 0-0 at half-time and if it wasn’t for their goalkeeper, who made some brilliant saves, the final result could have been more.”

A brace from Jane Ross and a Ruesha Littlejohn strike, all in the second-half, gave City the title and rounded off a busy period for Megan who has jetted across Europe in recent weeks.

Now City must catch up with the four league matches they missed while away on European duty and Glasgow begin that period with a game against Kilmarnock tomorrow (Thursday) before another meeting with Spartans this Sunday.

And the Glasgow City coach Peter Caufield knows tough times lie ahead, even after the weekend’s great win.

He said: “We play Spartans again this week in what is, arguably, a more important game, so I will be looking for a repeat performance.

“We were outstanding against Spartans, who are an excellent side, and we knew how difficult this would be but we controlled the whole game. To be honest, I am surprised we never won by more, we certainly had enough chances in the first half alone.

“But well done to the girls, I am so pleased for them and very, very proud.”

There are plenty more games to come for City, but there were no complaints from Megan as she tries to mix her job as a postlady with her football.

She added: “These past few weeks have been pretty hectic with work and football, but I wouldn’t change any of that. I love what I’m doing and if you work hard, I think you get rewarded for all that in the end.

“I’ve still got the Scottish Cup and the remainder of the league to look forward to now, but there’s a lot of good teams in both competitions this year. It’s going to be very tough for us to win all three but we’ve got a really good side and it would be great to defend the league this season.”
