EKYM reversed their away fixture against Weirs on Saturday in order to get the game played on a 3G surface at Hamilton – and it proved to be a good move as they won 2-0.
YM started brightly and Martyn McLaughlin was creating problems for the Cathcart team with some good play down the left flank. Unfortunately for YM, their strikers squandered several chances until they were awarded a corner in the 19th minute.
David Atha fired over an excellent ball which was met by YM’s man of the match Paul Tierney and he volleyed the ball into the net.
It was by now one way traffic and YM’s keeper Martin McKenna had little to do.
Steven Chaplain and David Atha came close to scoring but it was McLaughlin who doubled the lead when he collected the ball in his own half and beat two Weirs’ players before coolly striking the ball with the outside of his left foot into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
After the break it was Weirs who came out determined to get something from the game and they produced several chances which they failed to capitalise on. At the other end, YM had chances but in the end just played out the game to ensure the three points went to the East Kilbride team.
This Saturday YM’s Caledonian League side are at home to Rhu at K Park, kick-off 2.45pm.
Meanwhile, the Scottish Amateur side, who are sitting joint second in the league, have a home tie against Strathaven Dynamo at John Wright Sports Centre. The Greater Glasgow League side are away to John Street in Glasgow.
