Fish catch quota scheme expanded

A scheme aimed at reducing fish discards, where fishermen are forced to throw back part of their catch, has been expanded.

The Scottish Government has increased its catch quota trials to include 26 vessels.

Under traditional quotas, vessels have a set limit on the fish they can land and are forced to throw excess fish back in the sea dead. However, the catch quota scheme allows for all fish caught to be landed.
