East Kilbride counts the cost of flooding

Torrential rain battered East Kilbride this week leading to flooding on the roads and disruption in public transport.

The town saw the worst of the flooding after heavy downpours late on Sunday and into Monday.

And trains from East Kilbride station were also reduced to an hourly rather than an half-hourly service, with some services cancelled altogether.

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council said: “There was heavy rainfall across much of Scotland including South Lanarkshire late on Sunday night all the way through to lunchtime on Monday.

“Serious flooding was experienced in many places and in South Lanarkshire the rainfall caused problems at a number of locations with East Kilbride among the areas worst affected.

“Gully motors and tractor vehicles were sent to deal with the most serious situations and clear the roads of localised flooding.

“Some roads had to be closed including Holehouse Road, just outside East Kilbride.

“Heavy flooding made driving conditions treacherous on a number of roads, including Hawbank Road and High Common Road, East Kilbride.

“Many other roads were also affected by the conditions.

“Sand bags were delivered to some locations which were particularly at risk of severe flooding.

“Our staff continue to deal with the damage caused by yesterday’s flooding and will once again be on hand to respond to any emergencies.”
