ONE of Strathaven’s remaining four pubs is about to change hands.
Following the final demise this month of the Castle Tavern, which was reduced to a pile of rubble less than two weeks ago, the Waterside Inn is now being marketed by DM Hall chartered surveyors with an asking price of over £430,000.
A favourite with both locals and the many visitors who flock to the historic market town every year, the Waterside has been owned by Marie McNulty and her family for the past nine years – but now she is retiring.
Built in the 1980s and extended and enhanced over the years, the two-storey traditional property at 31 Waterside Street has one of the most enviable locations in the town.
It boasts a lounge bar with seating for up to 50 people and an open fire which is greatly appreciated by the regulars in the long months of winter.
There is also a 60-seat restaurant with an attractive beamed ceiling, which is served by a spacious kitchen, full commercial catering inventory and ample storage areas.
One of the most popular features in summer is the beer garden, which has a number of outdoor tables and a children’s play area and lies beside a delightful burn. It is accessed by French doors through the restaurant.
At the hub of the close-knit town, the Waterside provides facilities for christenings, weddings and funerals and is particularly well patronised in the busy festive period.
George Nisbet, partner specialising in commercial investment and valuation at DM Hall’s Edinburgh commercial office in Alva Street, said: “Pub/restaurants such as the Waterside are more than just sound commercial investments. They are at the heart of the community.
“The Waterside, with its unique location and excellent food and drink offering, has been host to the high points of Strathaven’s social calendar as well as providing a hearty Lanarkshire welcome to the ever-increasing number of day visitors to the town.
“Opportunities such as this appear on the market rarely and the successful bidder will be taking on a business which is warmly regarded in Strathaven and the surrounding area.”
